ST. PHILIP’S E-NEWSLETTER

7 OCTOBER 2011

COMMENTS FROM THE EDITOR

Brrrrrr….autumn is here most convincingly.

So, what better to curl up by a warm computer,

grab a cup of coffee,

and let the pixels do the talking!!

THOUGHT

The abbot was in a mellow mood and the monks were inquisitive.

‘Do you ever feel depressed?’,  they asked.

He said he did.

‘Isn’t it also true that you are in a continual state of thanks and thus appreciation and happiness?’, they persisted.

He said it was.

‘What is your secret?’, they wanted to know.

The abbot said, ‘This: everything is as good or as bad as one’s opinion makes it.’

WORSHIP

This week’s text is Genesis 3.14-24.  For a few initial musings from the minister, check out www.stewartweaver.org.  You’ll also see some photos of our last Messy Church, focussing on the apple press borrowed from Pedal.

And, as always, a quiet communion from 9.30-10.00 and worship at 11.00, where this week Jan Thomson will share some thoughts about Fresh Start.

BEFORE WORSHIP

God first called the unlearned, and then some philosophers.  He did not teach fishermen by oratory, but he taught orators by fishermen.  Gregory the Great

Prayers

Leader:          Lord, when I am hungry

People:          Give me someone to feed.

Leader:          When I am thirsty

People:          Give water for their thirst.

Leader:          When I am sad

People:          Someone to lift from sorrow.

Leader:          When burdens weigh upon me

People:          Lay upon my shoulders the burden of my fellows.

Leader:          Lord, when I stand greatly in need of tenderness

People:          Give me someone who yearns for love.

May your will be my bread;

your grace my strength;

your love my resting place.  Amen.

EVENTS

Sunday, 9th October 2011

  • Tea and Coffee will be served in the main hall after the 11am service this morning.  Please join us!
  • Choir Practice: There will be choir practice after the 11am service this morning.
  • Gathering for New Members: If you are thinking about joining St Philip’s there will be an informal gathering in the Sanctuary this evening, Sunday, 9th October or Monday, 24th October at 7.30pm.  The evening will be very informal with refreshments and an opportunity to talk together about Christianity and a short video.  If you are thinking about joining St Philip’s but are unable to come along on either evening please speak to Stewart.
  • The Shoe Box Appeal 2011: We are once again supporting the Shoe Box Appeal this year but with a different approach.  You can now help by filling a shoe box as usual or you can donate any of the items noted in the brochure to our large shoe box which will make an appearance soon!  In particular the items needed are small hair brushes, combs, sewing kits, small notebooks, candles and packets of sweets (not chocolate) with a sell by date of March 2012.  All these items will then be used to ‘top-up’ shoe boxes.  Thirdly, you can make a donation towards the cost of transporting the boxes.  Shoe boxes must be available for transportation to the collection centre by 11am on Sunday, 6th November.  All information on the appeal and a leaflet is available from Gordon or Sheila Hay.
  • The Magazine: The deadline for November diary and magazine contributions is Sunday, 23rd October.  Please email them to pmidonaldson@blueyonder.co.uk, or put them in the Magazine pigeon hole.
  • Magazine:  The Magazine is ready for collection by distributors.
  • 10th Anniversary of our return to the Sanctuary Celebrations: As part of our 10th Anniversary celebrations we are planning to hang up lots of photographs of people in the Sanctuary itself.  The building and the Sanctuary are stunning but it is the people who give it life!   So bring in photos of yourself, people in the church who are important to you, group photos from organisations or simply gatherings of friends, anything!  We’ll create collages and they will adorn the walls.
  • Do you enjoy playing games, telling stories, making crafts, singing songs or sharing your faith in fun and creative ways? Then perhaps you might consider joining our children’s and youth ministry team. There are several opportunities to help as Sunday School and Breakfast Club get started again for the year, please contact Michelle Brown at childrenandyouth@stphilips.co.uk for more information and to get the PVG Disclosure process underway.
  • Shopping for the Homeless and Freshstart: The Grassmarket Community, who help the homeless in Edinburgh, have asked if people would be willing to add a bit extra to their shopping basket.  Stock cubes, lentils, salt and pepper are always needed as well as sugar tea and coffee.  A separate box has been added for cleaning materials for Freshstart.  Freshstart always need cleaning materials particularly basic items such as blue cleaning cloths, scouring pads and cleaning products.  In addition to this they are always looking for household items and at the moment they are particularly short of tumblers, single duvets, cutlery (mainly table knives and teaspoons) and pillows.  Donations of these items can be left in the Flower Room.
  • Fundraising Penny Tubes are available today for your small change.  Please take one.  Full tubes can be returned to the basket on the shelf at the back of the church and a new one taken to start filling again!  The penny total is creeping up and has now reached £773!

Monday, 10th October 2011

  • The Prayer Group: The Prayer Group meets at 9.45am in the Baird Hall and everyone is welcome to join us.   Prayer Request Boxes have been placed on both sides of the vestibule.

  • Country Dancing takes place in the Main Hall at 7.30pm.  For more information please contact Liz Veitch.  All are welcome to join us.

Saturday, 15th October 2011

  • The Walking Group: Meeting at the church as usual at 10am, we travel by car to Duns for a 6 mile walk through the Duns Castle Estate, visiting the Duns Hill Fort with its panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.  Some muddy paths again with a loo in the village to start and an excellent coffee shop to finish.  Further detail please contact the Andersons.

Friday, 4th November 2011

  • The King’s Word: This year is the 400th anniversary of the King James Bible.  You can attend a novel happening in a prestigious location, and bring colleagues and friends.  It will be a two hour mix of discussion and drama with a drinks reception.  No charge, but donation will be welcome at the end of the event.  Friday, 4th November from 6pm – 8pm in Playfair Library in Old College on South Bridge.

JOKE

A few deep thoughts……

I have kleptomania, but when it gets bad, I take something for it.

Follow your dreams!
Except the one where you’re naked in church.

My short-term memory is not as sharp as it used to be.
Also, my short-term memory’s not as sharp as it used to be.

A bartender is just a pharmacist with a limited inventory.

I am a nobody.
Nobody is perfect.
Therefore I am perfect.

Thanks Chris C.!

Have a good weekend!!!
